| SPAY AND NEUTER CLINIC |
Our spay and neuter clinics are done onsite by NJ State licensed Veterinarians with over 50 years of combined experience doing spay and neuter surgeries. Clinics are held on Wednesday and Friday every week and are by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, you can fill out our electronic spay/neuter form or you can download our spay/neuter form and fax the completed form to (609) 344-0369 then call us at (609) 347-2487 to schedule an appointment. You can also bring the completed spay/neuter form in during normal business hours to our shelter which is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11am until 3pm to schedule an appointment. Thousands of animals are seen here every year which dramatically reduces the amount of unwanted puppies and kittens being surrendered to our shelter as well as others on an annual basis. |

CLICK HERE FOR PRINTER-FRIENDLY VERSION Keep your pet from licking or chewing on the wound. If this is difficult to do, you might want to provide a physical barrier by placing an “Elizabethan Collar” around his/her head. This is dispensed with all dog surgeries and must be kept on for (10) ten days. These collars are available for cats as well at a small fee if you need one. If your pet removes his/her sutures he/she will need to come in for anesthesia, surgical repair, and antibiotics at an additional fee, so please keep the collar on for the full ten days. Chances are your pet will be weak after surgery. Do not let him/her get too excited. Restrain your animal with a leash or put him/her in a carrier when leaving the hospital as this will protect them from additional injury. Keep dogs leashed when outside for 10 days as well. Please provide only small amounts of food and water until he/she re-adjusts to being at home and is recovering. Too much food and water can lead to an upset stomach or vomiting. Limit your pet’s exercise, climbing stairs, jumping or running may open up sutures or cause nausea. Your pet has dissolving sutures that will fall out in 1 to 3 months however they can be removed approximately 10 days after surgery. Check the area around the incision daily for redness, swelling or drainage. If you detect any irritation, please contact us immediately. Your pet may need booster vaccines; these are generally needed three weeks after the initial vaccine. These vaccines should be boosted at your regular veterinarian, or can be done through our full service veterinary clinic by making an appointment. Generally, we can booster these vaccines during our Spay Clinics on Wednesday or Friday. Please call (609) 347-2487, 344-0346, or 348-8076 for more information. |
| SPECIAL POST-OP INSTRUCTIONS FOR NEUTER PAITENTS |
A small percentage of dogs can have some mild bleeding post-operatively. This usually can occur a couple of days after surgery in dogs that have become too active. You may notice signs ranging from some mild bruising or discoloration of the surgical area and/or scrotum. The scrotum also may become enlarged or swollen as well. You can minimize the risk of this happening by restricting your dog's activity for 7 days post-op. These conditions are rarely life threatening or serious but may cause your pet mild discomfort. If you notice this happening in your dog, please apply a cold compress for at least 5 minutes, 4 times daily and call the HSAC at (609) 348-8076. The Humane Society of Atlantic County will make every attempt to treat post-operative complications at our veterinary clinic. Our Veterinary Services clinic is open Monday through Saturday. Depending on the complication, there may be a nominal fee assessed to the visit. Generally, a $25 re-check fee and costs for medication are charged to the client. Surgical repairs will be charged at a reduced fee. The Humane Society of Atlantic County will not reimburse for medical fees charged at any other veterinary facility. |
| BENEFITS OF SPAYING/NEUTERING YOUR PET |
Spaying or Neutering your pet could very well be one of the most important choices you end up making as an animal owner. Aside from the health benefits of spaying or neutering your pet there is an estimated 6-8 million homeless animals entering animal shelters every year in the U.S. alone. Tragically, only half of these animals may find a home through adoption while the other half may end up being euthanized. Being proactive and spaying or neutering your animal can have a tremendous effect on the homeless animal population going forward and can lead the way to less animals being euthanized on an annual basis. Spaying or neutering your animal is the only permanent, 100 percent effective method of birth control for dogs and cats. |
